Abstract
Abstract Curcumin is a bioactive compound known for its various pharmacological activities, but its usage is limited by poor solubility and stability. This study aims to develop and characterize films containing chitosan and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) for the delivery of curcumin. In this research, various concentrations of curcumin (0.1%, 0.2%, and 0.3%) were incorporated into chitosan-PVA film matrices. The films were then tested using FTIR, thickness uniformity, in vitro curcumin release, mechanical properties, and SEM. The results showed that the addition of curcumin indicated chemical interactions between the film components as evidenced by FTIR results. Thickness tests produced films with no significant difference in thickness between formulas. Based on in vitro tests, the film with the best mechanical properties was F1 with curcumin release of 78.08% at pH 6.8 and 25.81% at pH 1.2. F1 had an elastic modulus value of 0.88 MPa and a tensile strength of 1.31 MPa. Keywords: curcumin film, chitosan, PVA (polyvinyl alcohol)
