Abstract

Abstract Work stress is one of the psychosocial occupational hazards that can reduce productivity, well-being, and the quality of services in the workplace. Workload and work fatigue are considered factors associated with the development of work stress, although their relationships may differ between academic staff and administrative staff in higher education institutions. This study aimed to analyze the relationships among workload, work fatigue, and work stress, as well as to compare the levels of workload, work fatigue, and work stress between academic staff and administrative staff at Bakti Tunas Husada University. A quantitative study with a cross-sectional design was conducted involving 50 respondents selected using purposive sampling. Workload was assessed using the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Task Load Index (NASA-TLX), work fatigue was measured using the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI), and work stress was evaluated using the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, the Mann-Whitney U test, and Spearman's rank correlation test at a significance level of 5%. The results showed that the mean workload score was 75.86 (high category), the mean work fatigue score was 66.87 (moderate category), and the mean work stress score was 68.68 (high category). No significant differences were found in workload, work fatigue, or work stress between academic staff and administrative staff (p > 0.05). Among academic staff, only work fatigue was significantly associated with work stress (p < 0.05). In contrast, among administrative staff, significant relationships were found between workload and work stress, work fatigue and work stress, as well as workload and work fatigue (p < 0.05). These findings indicate that the relationships among the study variables differ between the two occupational groups, highlighting the need for sustainable occupational health and safety (OHS) programs tailored to the characteristics of each group in higher education institutions. Keywords: workload, work fatigue, work stress, staff.
