Abstract

ABSTRACT Due to environmental stressors and free radical exposure, the lips easily experience dryness, creating a need for cosmetic formulations offering dual aesthetic and hydrating benefits. Rich in vitamin C, polyphenols, flavonoids, and anthocyanins, roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) presents strong potential as a natural moisturizing, antioxidant, and coloring agent. This experimental research focused on formulating a tinted lip balm incorporating roselle flower extract as a hydrating component, alongside evaluating its physical quality, stability, moisturizing efficacy, and antioxidant profile. Four distinct formulations were prepared using roselle flower extract concentrations of 0% (F0), 1% (F1), 3% (F2), and 5% (F3). The evaluation encompassed organoleptic traits, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, spreadability, adhesion, irritation potential, hedonic preference, moisturizing capability, and thermal stability via the cycling test method. Antioxidant performance was assessed through the DPPH assay using vitamin C as a standard reference. All tested formulations successfully satisfied the established physical quality benchmarks and displayed robust stability. The recorded increases in lip hydration reached 40.00% for F0, 50.00% for F1, 66.03% for F2, and 73.92% for F3, establishing F3 as the most effective moisturizing variant. Roselle flower extract demonstrated strong antioxidant capacity with an IC₅₀ value of 71.89 ppm, whereas vitamin C registered an IC₅₀ value of 5.4815 ppm. These results confirm that roselle flower extract holds significant promise for development as an active natural constituent in tinted lip balms featuring good physical stability, moisturizing efficacy, and strong antioxidant action. ABSTRAK Akibat pendedahan radikal bebas dan pengaruh lingkungan, bagian kulit bibir menjadi sangat peka terhadap kekeringan sehingga membutuhkan produk kosmetik penunjang penampilan sekaligus pelembap. Kandungan senyawa metabolit seperti vitamin C, polifenol, flavonoid, dan antosianin dalam bunga rosella (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) menjadikannya berpotensi sebagai moisturizer, antioksidan, dan pewarna alami. Penelitian eksperimental ini difokuskan pada pengembangan sediaan tinted lip balm berbasis ekstrak bunga rosella sebagai pelembap, beserta analisis mutu fisik, stabilitas, efikasi pelembap, dan aktivitas antioksidannya. Empat variasi formulasi dirancang menggunakan konsentrasi ekstrak bunga rosella 0% (F0), 1% (F1), 3% (F2), dan 5% (F3). Evaluasi sediaan mencakup pemeriksaan organoleptik, homogenitas, pH, viskositas, daya oles, daya lekat, potensi iritasi, uji hedonik, efek pelembap, serta stabilitas fisik via metode cycling test. Penentuan aktivitas antioksidan dieksekusi dengan assay DPPH mengacu pada pembanding standar vitamin C. Seluruh formula berhasil memenuhi kriteria standar mutu fisik dan mempunyai stabilitas yang memadai. Peningkatan kelembapan bibir tercatat berturut-turut mencapai 40,00% (F0), 50,00% (F1), 66,03% (F2), dan 73,92% (F3), yang mana performa terbaik ditunjukkan oleh formula F3. Ekstrak bunga rosella memperlihatkan aktivitas antioksidan kategori kuat dengan nilai IC₅₀ 71,89 ppm, dibandingkan nilai IC₅₀ pembanding vitamin C sebesar 5,4815 ppm. Hasil tersebut mengonfirmasi potensi ekstrak bunga rosella untuk diformulasikan sebagai konstituen aktif alami pada tinted lip balm yang stabil secara fisik, berefek pelembap, dan beraktivitas antioksidan kuat.
